ADAPTIVE REUSE OF THE RED INN IN LUBLIN RESTORING PRIMARY FUNCTION OF THE FACILITY
Location: Turystyczna 2 | Lublin | Poland
Category: MArch Thesis

Timeline: November 2023
The subject of the study was to examine the possibilities of restoring the inn function as part of the program of the historic building of the Red Inn in Lublin. The aim of the adaptation project was to rediscover and use the potential of the building, which is an important settlement and social element in the history of the city of Lublin, which, despite excellent location connections and over five hundred years of tradition, seems to remain unknown not only to tourists visiting the city, but also to the inhabitants themselves. The study has included research on the facility and the history of tavern culture in Poland, the result of which is an architectural design for the adaptation of the historic building along with a proposal for new brewery volumes that will complement the historical narrative of the facility. The idea of the work was to create an authentic space that meets the program assumptions of a traditional inn, allowing user to rediscover its cultural identity.
BUILDING DESCRIPTION
An eastern-type brick inn with a wide-front, symmetrical layout, and a carriage house located in the extension of a wide, centrally located passage hall.

HISTORICAL VIEW
STATE OF PRESERVATION
After a thorough analysis and field tests, the building was found to be in a critical condition. The worst situation concerns the part of the carriage house that was not included in the general renovation of the building. The main body of the building also poses a threat to the life and health of people in its vicinity due to the lack of protection against broken cornices.
IDEAL DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT
The leading idea of the project was to restore, within the existing building of the historic inn, its original functional program lost as a result of transformations and adaptations of the last two centuries. Beer brewing, which is in fact immanent to the tavern culture, including the history of the designed building, became the main stimulus in the consideration of the choice of the direction of its development.
This task, already at the research stage, was significantly hampered by the negative assessment of the overall technical condition of the facility.
In order to maintain the authenticity of the facility, a four-stage design division was used, which assumes:
a) adaptation of the main body of the inn for hotel and catering purposes
b) reconstruction of the former coach house with a bar and entertainment function
c) supplementing the composition of the plot with a new production and warehouse building intended for the production of craft beer and the administration of facilities
d) transport assimilation of the study area

DESCRIPTION OF THE LAND DEVELOPMENT CONCEPT
The starting element and the main tool in designing the development of the plot was its original compositional arrangement "entre cour et jardin". The compositional axis leading from the courtyard of honor through the hall to the stable and garden allowed for the development of an ergonomic distribution of functions in the conditions dictated by the existing buildings. In front of the main building, surrounded by park vegetation, a parking zone was created for guests visiting the facility. Its aggregate surface is intended to eliminate the barrier to rainwater in difficult ground conditions and is also an aesthetic and economic element embedded in the garden space and emphasizing the beauty of the plants growing there.
On the other side of the facility, between the carriage house gate and the designed brewery building, a multi-level paved courtyard for outdoor recreation was created. In the east, it intersects with large areas of garden greenery leading from Turystyczna Street through an alley to the side entrance to the building. The designed fruit trees are intended not only to separate the investment area from the noise emitted by vehicular traffic, but also to remind viewers of their historical role in the city landscape. Moreover, the fruit derived from them is intended for unlimited consumption as a sensory element in the building's surroundings.
The lower level of the courtyard is the beer garden of the Budzyń brewery. Located in a basin near the western wall of the carriage house and surrounded by a brick wall, it constitutes an intimate urban interior. A strip of garden greenery has been designed along the wall. Terrain stairs and the stairs of the carriage house terrace lead to the garden area from the upper courtyard. The garden is equipped with garden furniture, which allows you to enjoy local beer and meals outdoors during the season.
DESCRIPTION OF ARCHITECTURAL SOLUTIONS
In the presented work, form follows function and accompanies it in every design decision made. The appearance of the designed facility is directly influenced by its purpose and two hundred years of history. The author of the project focused on maximum purism of form, honoring traditional construction and aesthetic solutions, resulting strictly from the language of the existing form. The desire to leave the historic walls of the coach house was verified by tests determining the technical condition of the foundations of this part of the building, which left no doubt that they could not be saved. However, they became the basis for the reconstruction process.
External walls made of solid brick, painted with white paint, were designed on reinforced benches, reproducing the historical frame division and rhythm of openings. However, the openings were narrowed and enlarged, giving them a new, slim and modern expression with a mullion reference to the historical divisions of the windows of the main body of the inn. The apparently avant-corpsed north-eastern wall dictated the shape and extent of the roof of the "new" state. Its construction required redesigning the upper roof of the inn, dictating a symmetrical reflection of the attic in order to smoothly connect both parts of the building. The characteristic pediment crowning the roof contour was designed to give the facility greater dynamics. All new roofs were designed with a rustic S-shaped ceramic roof tile finish, respecting the aesthetics of the historical form.
The composition of the plot is complemented by the building of the "Budzyń" brewery. Designed in the shape of historical buildings, made of brick and covered with tiles, it pays tribute to the stylish features of its surroundings, emphasizes the importance of the function inside, and combines a regional character with unobtrusive modernity. The elements of industrial window joinery used on the facades, together with the external chimney, refer to the production purpose of the facility. However, in the part finished with formwork, whose external form refers to a traditional farm building, there is a storage area.
COMPOSITIONAL AND SPATIAL EFFECT
The result of the design activities is a stylistically and narratively coherent composition of the inn and brewery buildings. Newly designed buildings on the northern border of the plot allowed for the creation of a friendly, intimate space reflecting the former rural character of the complex and pointing to its genealogical background in the history of the city. The landscaped interior created as a result of the decisions made is both quiet and vibrant with life centered around communing with nature and flowing with the flow of everyday entertainment.
The composition of the premises integrates historical and contemporary features. The construction solutions used in the project for new and adapted spaces are mostly traditional and use natural materials such as stone, ceramics or
wood. The choice of these materials resulted primarily from the need to achieve a harmonious space that would maximize the value of form and historic content. The use of such a small range of materials made it possible to achieve this effect while maintaining the high expression resulting from the rawness and monumentality resulting from
minimalism of form.
The entire composition looks like a modern farm complex with accents of rural architecture.

INTERIOR DESIGN
The external form of the building was intended to tell the story hidden inside the walls. A spacious bar room was designed under a monumental mansard roof. Its interior is filled with traditional materials. The internal walls are finished with soft gypsum plaster. The wooden structure of the mezzanine supported by columns, balustrades, stairs and roof trusses bring warmth to the interior and allow you to properly experience the history of the building's functions, while the alternating terracotta floor and elements made of white gazara in the bar space make the space firmly settle in its place. character, is authentic and raw. Light was introduced into the interior through eight slender window openings on the ground floor of the building and four elbow windows illuminating the mezzanine space.
